| Dr Rowbotham has spent some 35 years in the
telecommunications business in Europe and USA, and has
worked in the development of all forms of transmission
systems from microwave line of sight, satellite systems, and
VDSL copper local loop systems, to optical undersea systems
where he led the team which developed the first
trans-Atlantic undersea optical fiber cable system, TAT-8.
He has worked in INTELSAT where he led the communications
R&D of Intelsat, Washington DC, and in BT where he rose to
be the head of the R&D Laboratories of BT, with 3000
engineers in California, Virginia, Texas, UK and Australia.
He is a founder of Concert, the joint venture formed between
BT and MCI (and later AT&T), and was based in Reston
Virginia.
He was a Board member of Fulcrum, the joint venture
between BT and Fujitsu.
He founded Kimberley Communications, which became the
largest global provider of 3-D electromagnetic modeling
software. In 1999 this company was sold to Flomerics plc, a
company quoted on the UK stock market, and Tom remains with
the company as Deputy Chairman.
He is now a Venture Partner with Vesbridge Partners based
in Boston Mass, and lives in UK. He has served on the Boards
of many startups, and currently serves on five Boards.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the
founding President of the TINA consortium, and founder of
the FSAN consortium. He has BSc, MSc, and PhD, and is a
visiting Professor at Kings College, London and has written
one book and over 50 papers.
He is the 2003 winner of the Frederik Philips Award,
which is awarded each year by the IEEE for R&D leadership in
any branch of electrical engineering. |
